What was once a revolutionary, provocative and sinful guerrilla war againt the western civilization, today is barely a fine exercise in surrealism, that doesn't stand as well as other Buñuel films, and isn't half as bold and shocking as 'Un Chien Andalou', which is much shorter and concise. Still there is some quite memorable imagery, and if anything one has to admire how ballsy it was for Buñuel to produce this film in the first place.

A weaker effort from Bunuel. Not quite as charming or consistently funny as some of his other work, and despite its short length, it drags quite a bit.

There's only so long you can put up with unending surrealism; some bits drag a little. When it's on form, though, it's fantastic. Gotta love the toe-sucking.

Art enfants terribles, surrealists Buñuel and Dalí in all their gloriously funny and unsettling splendor. After the father opts to shoot his own child, this film had a friend in me fo' life, yo! Ahem. I liked it.

A fair amount of the symbolism is pretty straightforward juxtapositions of social caste and movement, crumbling of institutions and interrelational space. It can be considered as a summary of topics Bunuel will delve in the future far more maturely and successfully. Breathtaking photography for the period.

With his follow up to Un Chien Andalou, Luis Buñuel does not disappoint the surrealism junky. L'Âge d'or is pure existential artistic expression, and leaves the viewer in shock throughout. Buñuel was not afraid to provoke the world, and as a result, the doors to experimental surrealism in cinema was opened.
