Is it important in cinema history? Sure. It is fun to watch? Not particularly, but it's only a minute long.

The story of the first crowds who watched it ducking and scrambling to get out of the way of the train is certainly funny, another historic short from the Lumière brothers.

If any film manages to beautifully succeed in capturing the feeling of boarding or departing a train, this film is it.

Even thinking this could be a simple Lumiere short, important historically but with no artistic or entertaining value, one of those I would just put a simple medium 50 to show I watched it, the case is different now. All the myth about people scared for the arrival train is good enough to make it a bit different for any other Lumiere short. People was no delighted or surprised, they were excited and frightened, a new undiscovered power of the invention.

How do you rate something like this? Its impossible really. It's a train, a cinematically important train, but still just a train! There's not much else to say!

Historically important. For some reason I really enjoyed seeing the clothes people were wearing.. Today this is only useful for understanding the history of film though, and doesn't really have entertainment value. It's hard to rate because of this, so the score is pretty arbitrary.

Sometimes I like to think about the honest, provincial folks back in 1895 who, unfamiliar with film as a medium, saw an enormous train bearing down on them and with eyes as wide as saucers and mouths shaped like tiny hamburgers, dove screaming into the aisles to avoid meeting their demise. And then I laugh a deep, hearty, stupid laugh, wipe the drool from my chin, and feel like an asshole.

That story about the world premiere is interesting, and this deserves credit for it's infuence. It's still just a shot of a train arriving at a train station and even though I watched it 4 times I didn't see anything special about the shot.
