A bit atrocious in the beginning but then quite funny. And, of course, a technical miracle.

Méliès is one of the early great filmmakers, and this short tells you exactly why.

Legitimately funny. It's a bit ridiculous how much better Méliès was than any other turn-of-the-century filmmaker.

Melies certainly has a fantastic imagination. Hilarious short, although not quite as good as A Trip to the Moon.

Not only are the effects great for their time, this also has an original premise and a great payoff at the end. One of the best films I've seen from this period.

Oh yes I remember sitting in a nickelodeon back at good ol' nineteen-one, seeing no less than a man taking a living head out of a box, the blasphemy, the horror. Oh Méliès what a wizard you were. Shine on you crazy diamond, shine on.

This is genuinely funny stuff. I can only imagine what a 1901 audience must've thought when they saw that disembodied head. Méliès must've had some hilarious conversations with people who were at a complete loss about how the hell he accomplished this.
