Summary: Set in an undisclosed time and place 'The City without a Voice', whose inhabitants have lost their voices to the sinister Mr. TV, live their daily lives in an eternal snow and are subjected to controlled Television programming and must even eat a mind-numbing TV dinner. However, this is not enough for Mr. TV—he wants their minds as well... (cinemawithoutborders.com)
It's as if Sin City was directed by Fritz Lang, La Antena takes a great but simple premise and chucks a ton of silent movie inspired visual tricks at it. Bit heavy-handed metaphoring with the whole swastika/star of david imagery though...
"This is visual candy, but empty, like an MTV homage to 20s expressionism and fantasy with a nod to Guy Maddin. The style is a shiny silent film, but the dialogue is splayed all over the screen with endlessly inventive and distracting text effects. I'm also not sure as to how they communicate and why they move their lips even though they have no voice, and why bells make noise but machine guns make text effects."
If Georges Méliès would be caught in a magic beam and transported to these times, he would make a movie similar to this one. Magic of silent experimental movies and technology of today makes this little gem an unforgetable expierence. A must see.

Esteban Sapir created a fascinating movie that´s really hard to discribe. The look reminds me a bit of the early Fritz Lang Movies. Some parallels to the silent movies are distinctive, too. At least "La Antena" is artfully, beautiful and really pretty to watch.
I loved some of the style elements. Especially the use of text. Budgetary restrictions are worked around with technical cleverness. If only for that I respect the filmmakers immensely. Homage madness obstructs it from attaining individuality. Quite a piece.
Who would have thought that a mixture of Fritz Lang and Sin City would make such an amazing movie. The plot, some 1984-like dictatorship-thing, is maybe not the most interesting one ever written, but the cartoonesque interpretation of old master like Lang and Eisenstein easily compensate for that. 02/07/09
Take a deep cooking pot. Put a tablespoon of Maddin's visual style and a pinch of Méliès trickery together. While stirring add a few of Gilliam's quirky TV screens from Brazil and some very obvious Metropolis homage. Keep stirring till boil, then lower the heat and leave it to simmer for 15 minutes. 'La Antena' is what you will get. Somewhat tasty since the ingredients are decent but still not special. Please serve hot.
