Summary: Sophie, a quiet and shy maid working for the upper-class family Lelievre, hides her illiteracy under the cloak of a perfect household and obedience. She finds a friend in the energetic and uncompromising postmaster Jeanne, who encourages her to stand up against her bourgeois employers. Things start to escalate as the Lelievres find out that Sophie can't read and has brought Jeanne into their house against their wish. (imdb)

There's not much room to elaborate on without spoilers popping up everywhere. I'll just say that despite qualms with the introduction of a few character details, this is highly effective work from Chabrol.

Rockets to the top of my Chabrol list, as cool and calculating as his other films, but easier for me to grasp its ironies and the dance between comedy and horror was never more pronounced. That's not to say the film is unsubtle --there are many seemingly throwaway details that are in fact quite telling-- it's just that here there is a rigor to Chabrol's logic that wasn't apparent to me before.

Truly awesome psychological thriller that steadily builds up tension, uneasy and unsure suspicion, a feeling of dread but nothing specifically predictable. Huppert and Bonnaire's performances are bone-chillingly creepy. With its undertones of social tension, this is almost like the thriller that Michael Haneke always tries to make and never quite succeeds. Chabrol (and Ruth Rendell) pass with flying colors.

A superb Chabrol film about class hatred, based on a novel by Ruth Rendell. Huppert and Bonnaire both give excellent performances.

I had watched this before but didn't remember how good it was. Just saw it again and found it gripping. Great tension building.

Almost from the beginning the movie is on the line between elegant everyday-ness and a strong uncomfortable feeling. Chabrol puts you in the shoes of these morally strange characters perfectly and makes you (or just me) feel quite odd and restless. Sandrine Bonnaire and Isabelle Huppert are both decently mad.

Excellent script and flawless acting. The master Chabrol delivers a brilliant direction in this suspenseful drama with an increasing feeling of danger and tension.

Nice typical French, slow, drama movie. The end was surprisingly shocking, I had never expected such an anticlimax, worthwatching this. I found this movie great.

The hate of the two main characters against the rich family suggested the hate of their class for the well-to-do. This representation felt as if it was designed to evoke a reciprocal hate against this lower financial class. This could be debated, but the main reason for my low note is that the film hides its lack of cinematic interest behind a mere manipulation of the viewer's emotions.
