It appears baffling and absurd on first viewing, but this film is very rewarding to the patient viewer. Chaplin and Oscarsson both give brilliant naturalistic performances even given the challenging material. The chemistry and tension between them makes the film engrossing, although it's definitely a weird obscurity that will only appeal to a small minority (Saura-aficionados, mainly).
