La Sortie des usines Lumière (1895)

Summary: The 'plot' is outlined by the title: the film consists of a single shot of workers leaving the Lumiere factory, and the film would be of virtually no interest (except to students of late 19th century clothing) were it not for the fact that it was the first film ever to be projected to a paying audience, and is consequently one of the most important films in the history of the cinema (imdb)

How can people not love this stuff?! Sure all it is doing is recording a moment in history, but that's kind of why there's something so beautiful about it.

I would have been more sympathetic if Edison's record of a sneeze wasn't an example of a more interesting subject used even before this. So really, a step back, even at this early time!

Really heartfelt. Filmed back then, when people worked honestly in order to make a living, when people cooperated to achieve something.

Important moment in the medium of film-making, but of course not a piece of art by any definition. Still, as a film fan, it's nice to see this bit of history. I find it very neat to think how 115 years ago, the motion picture made it's first step from new experimental technology to the extremely important medium of art it is today. Also, PeaceAnarchy has never gone people-watching before.

One of the most known Lumiere shorts. It's nothing special, but well, who is interested in movies and doesn't know anything about this? A 55 just to show a bit difference, as I use to put a plain 50 to all these important but not artistic no entertaining Lumiere documents.

An important moment in history, noted as the first ever real motion picture made. The dog that turns up briefly IS the star of the show, though.

There's just something somehow beautiful about shorts like this... these little pieces of time that have been preserved for over a century, and will be preserved, presumably, for as long as there is a humanity

Pretty important since it was the first film ever produced in the world. Besides that, at 40 seconds long, it's too short and unbearably slow. Go see it anyhow.

Can't be rated subjectively; in 1895, this would be a stunning masterpiece; after the creation of editing and plot, it's just a boring shot of people walking. Still, it's a historical artifact, and there is some interest in watching people from a time so far removed from the modern day. Good to know dogs always chased after bikes, too.

Not meaningful, uninspired and not even a film unless you consider whatever happens to pass in front of an active camera 'a film' (well, I guess you could). Still, while I despise the Lumières for their lack of creativity and respect for art, they were still innovative inventors and I guess filmmakers still kinda owe them one. Hmm.

Ultimate kudos because this is the first theatre film ever despite lack of substance. But this film is still better than half the crap Hollywood puts out today, which really says alot about the current state of fimmaking.

People watching is a lot more entertaining than you would think, but this film still doesn't maintain interest after the first 2 or so minutes. Still, it's importance supercedes most of the banal aspects it may posses. Any film buff should watch it once.

This is actually really interesting as a study of human behaviour. Notice how some people turn left and others right, but at certain points when one side peters out everyone follows the lead until someone decides to break new ground. There are so many people that I could watch this all day and keep noticing different little things like this.

Impossible to review objectively. It's boring from a modern viewing, of course, but it's the first movie, so it's kind of the great-great-great-great grandfather of Scorsese and Woody Allen and Spielberg and Kurosawa and Kubrick and Tarantino and Hitchcock and James Cameron and Chris Nolan and Sergio Leone and Eastwood and Orson Welles and Michael Mann and the Coen brothers, so I can't really say "IT SUUUCKS!!", can I?
