Summary: What's left of mankind is cordoned off behind the walls of a fortified city while zombies roam the vast wasteland beyond. The few wealthy and powerful try to maintain an illusion of life as it was, dwelling high above the city in the exclusive towers of Fiddler's Green.
One of my all-time favourite zombie films and it's no surprise Romero is behind the camera as he simply knows how to make a great zombie movie. What's differs this film from the others is that we focus on individual zombies, and they even have names, as well as the survivors. Great cast with Simon Baker a perfect choice for the lead and strong performances from both Leguizamo & Hopper. There are also some very memorable scenes and lines making it an iconic Horror film for our generation!
I like John Leguizamo for some reason. It's the same social commentary over and over. I guess by now it's dull, and the movie didn't possess a thrilling sense of danger to make up for all the old messages.
It is to Romero's credit that he hasn't injected his zombies with the steroidal strength and speed of their bastard offspring in the remake of _Dawn..._; again to his credit that he hasn't accompanied them with the headbanging heavy metal that seems, everywhere else, to have become their obligatory musical motif (Romero isn't a teenager, he's in his mid-sixties); again to his credit that he has rejected any trendy razzle-dazzle technique in favor of solid old-fashioned craftsmanship
Bad characters and worse acting followed by hamfisted attempts at social lecturing really hurt this movie. I tried really, really hard to like this movie since it has a lot of good ideas but nothing comes out of it.
I love zombie films, books, games, etc. Also love the work of Romero. This one is a good movie. Not as subtle of a social commentary as his previous films.
A neat idea, but it suffers hugely from some stupid decisions - like the idiotic car that Asia Argento drives. What the hell's with that? And characters act stupidly all the time. And there's a pointless lesbian bit. But Dennis Hopper's funny. Yeah, that about covers it.
