Brando was one of the best actors indeed. Such a temper and so much vulnerability.

Brando makes a valiant effort to disguise a superficial script. The movie almost connects in the final third, but doesn't pay-off on its protracted build-up.

Brando plays a creepy asshole to the hilt and the contrast between glimpses of his fragility and the rest of his character is interesting, though underdeveloped. Some of the visuals are very nice, but not up to what I expected from Bertolucci and the content seemed rather hollow to me. I just have no point of reference to care about the themes in the film, so I was mostly entertained by its daring nature but not moved in any way.

Might do very nicely on an evening of dinner, a movie and some light BDSM. Bertolucci's usual hackery only shines through here in the presence of the annoying Léaud (who was always more of an avatar for his directors than an actor, anyway). All the scenes with Brando are pure cinematic black magic, though. The butter scene is often mentioned, but my preference veers to his coffin-side meltdown and his two-fingers-up-the-chute rant on porcine roman showers. A dark delight.

This film is sad twice, because unreciprocated love grows, fails, and then switches places, consuming entire worlds. The sexuality is a controversy from another era, one that I can't relate to, and for me it's an expression of fear, loss, and sometimes love that I think Bertolucci intended it to be. Brando's Paul is crass and distant because he is desperate and feels betrayed, and yet his distance strikes Schneider's Rose like a siren's call, and then fades away as his character comes into view.

Maybe one of the best porn movies you've ever seen. Nothing more!

You could remove everything but Marlon Brando, and I reckon it would still be a great film. But that would actually be a shame, for as much as Brando tops every other performance he did, Maria Schneider is just as essential here. Magic is created between them. Their relationship seems effortlessly profound and is entertainingly dramatic. Bertolucci deserves some mentioning too. Some of the best dialogue ever and it's all directed with a rare blend of spontanity, honesty and slight surrealism.

Middle aged Brando sex scenes *shiver*, still a pretty good look into a purely sexual relationship, with fantastic performances.

Incredibly moving filmmaking. Bertolucci is at the absolute top of his game. Storaro continues to prove to me that he may in fact be the greatest cinematographer to ever live. However, the one true reason to see this film is Marlon fucking Brando. One of the greatest actors who ever lives gives the absolute best performance of his career. The scene by his wife's body is like a dream. He's too good to be true.

One of Bertolucci's nicer efforts, in some ways reminded me of Godard's early stuff. Examines a playful and somewhat abusive relationship with a focus on sex that was considered daring for its time. Strong, compelling performance from Marlon Brando and lots of nudity from Maria Schneider. Not great though.

Just not my cup of tea.

Marlon Brando's soul-baring performance is astonishing. It's like butter.

One of Brando's most underrated and riveting performances. "I'm gonna get a pig and I'm gonna have the pig fuck you. I want the pig to vomit in your face and I want you to swallow the vomit. Yeah! I want the pig to die while you're fucking him. Then you'll have to go around behind him. I want you to smell the dying farts of the pig. Are you gonna do all that for me?" ..For you, Mr. Brando, yes. Yes I would.

"It's an artsy exploration of dark sexual obsessions as well as a character study where two strangers meet, have impulsive, anonymous sex, then develop a strange 'relationship' where each is using the other for their neurotic needs. The sex scenes (becoming more twisted as the movie progresses) are explicit and shocked audiences, and the performances are disturbingly frank but the whole thing is unreal and undone by its artsy pretentions."

"Ultimo tango a Parigi" is an imperfect but occasionally sweeping erotic fantasy, uncompromisingly utilizing sex scenes to shake and challenge. Bertolucci's direction is brilliant, the cinematography is striking and the two protagonists are great -especially Brando. However, the opaqueness can be distracting and there are dull parts in the middle. Still, the final 20' are glorious. Godard's influence is apparent, although I think this surpasses "À bout de souffle".

This is a movie about two different people at different places in their lives. One is a young girl who hasn't fully experienced love and the other is a middle aged man whose wife has recently killed herself. As one might expect their relationship is painful and broken, but heartfelt between them. As an art film, this is wholey watchable, but as a piece of modern entertainment in 2011 it is lacking.
