A good Western: tense, well-acted (particularly by Douglas and Jones), every shot well-framed and composed (although not ostentatiously so). Sturges directs very well, but by the end of the film I kept thinking . . . rape, murder, revenge, the hotel up in flames, a downbeat ending . . . if only Fritz Lang had been hired to direct, this just might have been a classic!

favorite line: linda's quip about an old (deceased) flame. he had a heart the size of a house, and a brain the size of a pea.... favorite scene: marshall morgan expounding the intricacies of hanging to rick... overall impression: reminiscent, in part, to 3:10 to yuma. an entertaining oater with a gratifying revenge angle.

A clichéd but good western. Its biggest flaw is the character of Linda, whose behavior is erratic and who utters a couple of pretty stupid lines. The people who wrote these movies were obviously clueless where women are concerned. It does have some strong Douglas/Quinn scenes though.

With a Title like that, how can this be anything close to dull? Wish I liked it more.

Yeah, it does pretty much the same thing a lot of westerns do but Belden and Morgan have a very convincing friendship and seeing the exchanges between the two characters was great. The woman was lame but then if I didn't seperate myself from that in a lot of westerns I'd probably hate the genre. I thought that the movie was pretty tense and suspenseful most of the time, and we got a great draw at the end (though that's to be expected).

Classic western - the women are useless and victimized stereotypes, picturesque landscapes, & people getting shot down in a haze of justified vengeance.
