Much, much prefer this to Ritchie's films. When the character who seemed like he belonged in them got shot between the eyes I had a huge middle-class moment of catharsis.

Solid ideas but lacks that fun edge which makes a great gangster picture. Characters are bland and Craig can do far better than Sienna Miller, especially with his character's bankroll. Not worth much more than a rent.

Slightly above average for a modern action film, and just interesting enough to finish watching. Michael Gambon was the highlight.

very slick crime movie with Daniel Craig at his very best. Also great little performance by Michael Gambon.

The best work in the genre. Craig's unnamed man finds himself surrounded by maniac Guy Ritchie-style gangsters, and tries to play it all business. The strength of it lies in his steady course through the madness, watching him scramble back to the surface at the points he becomes totally submerged. Lovely cinematography, great use of a limited budget and an independent streak unafraid to get a little tangential in order to further the characters.

Love European caper movies, and this one is no exception.

generic crime thriller trying to be more. even at its most philosophical it's still just babbling about the drug trade which it's not a particularly accurate depiction of. the score is terribly mismatched as well. a few points for nice visuals.

Most of the British gangster movies in the wake of Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels have been either inane & flippant Tarantino wanna-bes, or grim exercises is boredom. Layer Cake is thankfully neither. Its complex plot continuously places the viewer in a situation where he must reassess (as the protagonist does) the balance of power. It's an interesting movie from scene to scene, even if the ending unsatisfactorily seems De Palma-ish.
