Summary: A man (played by Melies) is asleep in bed when he begins a nice dream of a woman lying on the end of the bed but soon this turns into a nightmare as a monkey, a clown and the moon begin to play tricks on him. (imdb)
Blatantly fake, of course, but it's kind of cute and charming. I wonder if Melies knew he was making history by making these ultrashort (by modern standards) flickers
Thus far my favourite Melies venture, Le Cauchemar is deliriously entertaining in the way such cinema artifacts rarely are -- at least beyond the academic sense. An ode to the dream state in how it wackily refuses to make any sense whatsoever (mirroring dreams and nightmares as such), it's smile-inducing stuff that sees its visionary filmmaker's style living, breathing in a way that strikes as uncommon within his ineffectively creative oeuvre.
