Some old Greek dudes play mandolin tunes and another one recites a poem. Nice black and white photography. Another one of Herzog's attempts at being artsy which feels more like an exercise in flailing around in the dark.
Herzog's first great effort is this underrated, experimental short documentary filmed side by side with 'Signs of Life' about an ex-famous lyre player that, forgotten and erradicated from the abandoned leper colony where he lived, spends his night playing the lyre in a bar and refusing to speak. A perfect Herzog theme with beautiful scenaries and fantastic music. It isn't easy to find but at barely 12-minutes it's well worth looking for.
Oh man I love this sort of thing! This reminded me a lot of Bunuel's Las Hurdes. Herzog has such a flare for the quaint and esoteric. It may have been the music that got to me the most, but then I'm like that, music is my thing.
