Low-key WW2 drama which is let down by jumping between too many wishy-washy characters. Although the scene is set well and there are some human lives at stake, the only characters with any backbone are the Germans. Each of the candidates for the role of the resistance hero is either given too little screen time, or is let down by moral shortcomings. Perhaps this is Chabrol saying something about the state of the French nation in wartime. But it feels more like a case of scrambled eggs writing.
