I missed the first 30 minutes and almost fell asleep in sections, but that's not because it was boring. In fact, this was quite a fun movie with a good amount of comedy. There's also a nice helping of epic battle scenes and a good amount of drama too. And of course, the real centerpiece of the movie is Dustin Hoffman. Yes, this performance is not only a world record, but a pretty great one at that. Pacino or De Niro couldn't pull this off. Go Dusty.

Really good revisionist western that takes the idea in a different direction and adds some odd yet appropriate comedic touches.

Great satire with a wickedly irreverent attitude and a revisionist agenda that doesn't take itself too seriously. I just cannot imagine this being made today, we're too pc.

a good epic movie that has a fairly dry sense of humor only producing amusement instead of laughs, but there was a hell of a lot of amusement in it. clocking in at two and a quarter hours it never lets you down and hardly even has a moment that could be left out.

This episodic satirical Western is, as one might expect, uneven. But it's so well done that one can take the weaker episodes (or those that are cut oddly short) in stride. Dustin Hoffman plays the hero, Jack Crabb, from the age of 17 to 121, thanks to Dick Smith's brilliant makeup. During his life's journey, he encounters, among others, Chief Dan George (wonderful) as a Cheyenne chief who adopts him, Martin Balsam as a conman, and Richard Mulligan as a delusional Custer. Rich and fascinating.

I really like this film's respectful treatment of American Indians and their history, but have to rate it down somewhat for its pornographer's-eye-view of women.

Ramshackle, eccentric western which unfortunately never quite adds up to the sum of its parts, due to shifts in tone which only work sporadically. Performances are consistently fine, with Hoffman's tour-de-force a centrepiece, ably assisted by Chief Dan George's wonderful work as Grandfather. Dunaway also a hoot as a fallen society woman. Moments of unexpected humour work quite well, and ageing make-up for Hoffman is quite impressive (and used sparingly).

Hoffman really holds this sprawling almost-masterpiece together. Nice comic work by Faye Dunaway and Richard Mulligan's revisionist take on George Armstrong Custer are standouts, but in the end it's all perhaps too much of a good thing.

Very, very enjoyable comedy Western. Also one of the better Dustin Hoffman films, despite it being one of his earlier ones.
