"To Lisandro Alonso's wandering characters, every place they go seems like the edge of the world." - Fernando F. Croce

Exquisite filmmaking from Alonso here. The extended length of most of his shots, combined with the sparse movement of the camera, invites the viewer to contemplate and engage with the film. The whole piece is short on traditional answers, but its exploration of this character's journey works at the level of both the specific and the general. The ending is particularly poignant as it brings together the hints and suspicions with a devastatingly simple final shot.

I mean it's fine for what it is or whatever, but seriously, if you're going to make a movie this minimal you should at least make the shots look nice. Nothing happens but he sure does drink a lot of vodka...

(Viewed on 21/02/12): Alonso crafts another minimalist journey film, this time centered on Farrel, a freight worker that treks across vast, cold, seemingly endless landscapes to visit his dying mother, or so it seems. The scenes on the ship and the docks give us a brief glimpse into a life we rarely see, and while Fernandez doesn't have Vargas' presence, his muteness adds to the desolate atmosphere, and there is a 'twist' that highlights Alonso's talent for narrative counterpoint.
