If you're watching this film and finding that it doesn't really interest you, then just focus entirely on Burton's magnificent performance and you'll be fine.

Very well acted, but here's the thing: I have only very sketchy ideas of why Jimmy is so damn miserable. Maybe it's because I'm an American, or because I wasn't born until 1968, but it doesn't translate well for me. Still, getting past the reasons, it's a good view of a miserable bastard making someone else's life hell just so he won't be the only one.

Richard Burton's performance is the centerpiece of the film. His character doesn't completely work, but he's interesting and fun to watch.

One of the key films in the early 60's british Kitchen Sink movement.

If there was a list of "movies that make me never want to get married," this would be at the top. The entire film is fairly depressing, frightening, bleak, emotionally true, and well acted, but then they attempt to throw a positive spin into the final scene, which I didn't buy at all.
