Theroux's quest to deprive us of faith in humanity continues. This is even more depressing than his docs on fanatics in the USA, because unlike the Westboro Baptist Church and US Neo-Nazis, the loons portrayed here have real political power. (I'm not saying the Israeli government is as crazy or evil as these chauvinists, but as long as their aggressive actions and attitudes aren't countered, they fuel the conflict.) The unexpected appearance of Christian fundies makes it even sadder.

Theroux's focus on the lunatic fringe succeeds in making clear the tragic absurdity of the situation, and the near impossibility of doing anything about it, whether the political will to try exists or not.

Oh man. That Australian Jewish guy. "Look, we either occupy the West Bank or we go into the ovens of Auschwitz." What a persuasive debate.

Louis meets another bunch of moronic extremists with suicidal intent on provoking their enemy, this time in East Jerusalem. Although the worrying thing here is not the protagonists themselves but the fact they're sponsored/protected by Israel, a seemingly disproportionate number of state-funded troops defending their tiny (illegal) communities night and day. Makes it hard to see how, with these type of antics being officially condoned and promoted, peace will ever be achieved in this region.

Louis continues traveling the world's hot spots that don't generally receive much attention in media. This particular issue seems complicated and invokes the feeling of hopelessness about human nature and ability to think rationally. I always said that religion and blind patriotism are the most vile, idiotic and dangerous delusions.

Once again, Theroux asks sane questions of an organized bunch of lunatics. The extremists depicted here don't even represent the majority of West Bank settlers, and yet by preying on the fears of mainstream Israelis, they have wrapped the entire state and its institutions around their finger. As an Israeli and Zionist myself I find it particularly painful listening to the racist gibberish of those who would bury my country under endless conflict.
