Cagney plays the sympathetic insecure asshole perfectly, and Doris Day does a great job leading in this well-crafted character drama. The music is good, but the story is the real show. Powerful ending!

Cagney and Day are both very good here. Cagney is remarkably subdued and very sympathetic.

I wouldn't call it a good musical, as a musical is much more than an actress singing still. It's better if you consider the drama story about Etting and her bottom-up career filled with too many songs. The problem is Doris Day didn't want to make many vulgarities as it appeared to be real Etting's life, and they make it softer, and they were afraid many violence was censored, so they soft it too. So it's a very soft bio and drama. James Cagney is the best one with the duality of his character.

Really compelling, sad and well-acted. And filled with Doris singing some great old songs.

A shame that Cagney never dances, but this is one outstanding musical

Not fond of musicals and only watched this for Cagneys part,I wasnt disappointed.
