A kind of "upstairs downstairs" romantic melodrama, marvelously constructed. The remarkable camerawork is reminiscent of Ophuls (Leibelei came to mind specifically), with graceful tracking shots and frequent use of objects in the frame as symbolic barriers. The dialogue is well-written and all the performances are spot-on. And it's an engaging web of romantic intrigue and manipulation. I just wish I had connected with it on more of a gut level.
