Woody Allen's neurotic Jewish accent and sexy bad hair perfectly stand out against the impressive and visually stunning 19th century Russia. This could've been a comedy classic for me, but I felt the slapstick wasn't up to snuff as it should've been. But the film mainly concerns itself with the wonderful dialogue and hilarious inspections on the two title subjects. This is a film to be quoted to death.

It's not that I didn't get all the references to Russian litterature, I simply didn't find them all that humorous. Too much slapstick and intertextuality, too little of the real, heavenly neurotic Woody.

I like the way Allen makes tons of literary and philosophical references without sounding too arrogant. Diane Keaton is just priceless.

A fondly observed parody of War&Peace and certainly the best conceived of Allen's comedies. The lovable-drunk Uncle Sasha scene and the satirical existentialist-esque dialogue between Keaton and her cousin are guarantees to keep the laugh riot flowing.

This is one of Allen's best pre-Annie Hall movies. It's kind of weird and zany like the others, but it actually has something to say, unlike, for example, Take the Money and Run.

The wacky slapstick-y bits weren't as off-putting as in something like Bananas, mainly because they were mixed with hilarious, intelligent, philosophical dialogue and Bergman references. I prefer Allen when he's more down-to-Earth, but this was still very good.

I saw this right after "Take the Money and Run," and while it is a different kind of comedy, it is still just as funny. Chemistry between Allen and Keaton is great, lots of belly laughs, and if you like philosophy, you'll love the dialogue.

Comedy of Allen in a paced and hysterical madman. A type humor sometimes a little out of the ordinary, pretty goofy and exaggerated. But it has great lines, very entertaining.

Brilliant. Later Woody would take these Dostoevskian/Bergmanian (I'm making up phrases here) themes seriously, ala Crimes and Misdemeanors, but here they're the object of great fun. It strikes a great balance between reverence and pisstaking of the original texts. It's also gut-bustingly funny, one of the funniest Allens I've seen.
