Summary: Pierre, a youth, comes from his grandmother's in France to stay with his parents in the Canary Islands. His father talks oddly about his lost youth and leaves abruptly for France. Mom promises to take Pierre to a nightclub, remarking that people will think he's her lover. He prays. I'm sad for to see Isabelle Huppert in this. It's an art rubbish with unrealistic characters. Same art left helpless dog to die, tied to a wall in an art gallery, remember? Realism could be stupid but not that much.

If I'm going to be subjected to watching sex on the screen, I'd prefer it less depraved. And if I'm going to be subjected to a story, I'd prefer it less nonsensical.

if you can't laugh at the absurdity of this film, perhaps life is all too joyless after all.

Unsuccessful adaptation. Some of the negative reviews on IMDb are amusing and reading them after viewing the film helps to make the whole experience more worthwhile. A better option, however, would be to re-watch "Murmur of the Heart."

I have just seen the movie and I have to admit I hate the mother. She made her son into something he did not want to be. If I were the son, I would probably freak out several times during the course of the events in the movie. Why? Because I believe he only wanted to love and be loved which anyone in the world failed to give him.

In spite of an ambitious level of sophistication, the director fails to deliver any sign of a potent artistic product. Even Huppert disappoints.

New Extremist cinema, at its best, has a sense of purpose, usually an intensely disturbing one. A sense of purpose, however, is largely what MA MERE lacks. The theme of the innocent drawn into a seedy, dissolute world is nothing new, nor is the relationship between the protagonist and his mother, which goes about where you'd expect. It is pretty well made, however, with some good lines, decent performances, and a few audacious touches (like the ending). Mainly for New Extremist connoisseurs.

"Huppert doesn't turn this object d'cypher role into exactly the sort of gay-son-as-Oedipus tribute that Dan Harris flubbed with last year's Imaginary Heroes." - Eric Henderson
