Recipe for a Dreamworks movie: 1. Take CGI of various talking animals 2. Throw in a bunch of celebrities 3. Mix in some bad pop culture references 4. And be sure to say it's from the makers of "Shrek" Vooila!

It was more or less what I expected. It relies far too much on slapstick and especially pop culture references to make its comedy. The story's just too basic too. The characters weren't particularly likable or three-dimensional. Jada Pinkett Smith's character was simply an African-American woman - that's all she was. The voice-work was fine, with Sacha Baron Cohen being the standout. A very average and disposable animated film, but I've seen worse.

If my animals started talking with the voices of Ben Stiller and David Schwimmer, I would build a machine to speed up global warming and wipe us all out. Dreamworks Animation is useless to me, unless I have an urge for shitty films.

A typically exuberant CGI production with another batch of likeable characters and buoyant animation. However Madagascar falls down under the combined weight of missed plot opportunities, dull moments and yet more questionable pop references. While the plotline is for the mostpart interesting and the celebrity voices work reasonably well, the cast is overshadowed by the penguins and the monkeys, the latter of which we see not nearly enough of. Enjoyable, but there's better to be had elsewhere.

Not as charming or witty as many of the Disney/Pixar ventures, but still quite fun with an interesting premise and good cast of characters. The lemurs dancing to "I Like to Move It (Move It!)" is probably my favorite scene.

The four quirky animal friends (with their oddball supporting cast-the suave penguins are comedy gold) riff nicely off each other, and the comedy is only bolstered by the silly realism-pushing settings and situations (see the lax luxury of the zoo; penguin ship hijack), good one-liners ("Well this sucks") and fun visual gags (see Melman's "We're running out of time!" with a clock on his head). Alex and Marty's friendship crisis, meanwhile, brings some surprisingly mature (if short-lived) drama.

Simple, adequate fluff, watched because it's on Netflix streaming and I felt like turning my brain off. Never went out of my way to pursue watching these movies before and I wasn't missing a lot. Not really sure how kid appropriate some of the jokes were but DreamWorks has always toed the line there. Okay, but not great.

Madagascar was cute. It had some funny moments and it held a few surprises. The biggest surprise was the voice of David Schwimmer as the giraffe. He was morose yet funny. I didn't realize he would be a good voice actor. Ben Stiller is mediocre, as always. Chris Rock is hilarious, as always. Sacha Baron Cohen was funny but, at times, grating as well. Cedric the Entertainer had a small part but it was funny. The penguins were the hilarious sequel/merchandise gimmick but they worked as that; funny.

Dull and strangely ugly in its animation, this is a dumbed-down SHREK coat-tail rider, with the inherent charm and charisma of Rock, Stiller et al doing its best to combat a thin and senseless screenplay, which especially reveals its weakness once they hit the island with apparently nowhere to go, story-wise! Sort of watchable for the fun cast, but a bit of a swing and a miss for DreamWorks.

In 2005, two films with nearly the exact same plot were released. One is called The Wild. It was made by Disney/Pixar. The animation was outstanding, and the story was sweet and fun. The other was called Madagascar. It had animation that makes it look like it's from the mid 90's, and the story, though similar to that of The Wild, is marred by stupid gags and lame humor, saved only at times by some very funny penguins. Now, decide which of the two films is more worth seeing. Crap!

If this film featured King Julien and King Julien only, it would have been a lot better. He was the only star of the movie and all of my points go to him alone. It's not utterly hogwash when compared to modern animation films but it simply does not compare to the classic cartoon films of the '90s.

If there's two things I got out of this movie it's that Stiller is a horrible voice actor, and that David Schwimmer is a surprisingly decent one. This film was weak even for a Dreamworks picture and only a small number of jokes were even worth a chuckle. It's not completely unwatchable, but other than that there's nothing here that's really worth your time.

A funny family movie. The comedy is more slapstick than dry to cater to the smaller ones in the audience. Dreamworks attempts to hide some more adult comedy in there through the secret addition of swear words "cleverly" disguised. However, they did not do it with the finesse that Disney is known for. Sugar Honey Iced Tea is exclaimed by the Zebra, and the logs writing "Help" wash away to replace the "P" with an "L". It is a sweet story though and definitely worth watching.

Madagascar is an incredibly average animated film from Dreamworks. Compared to their finest work Shrek, this is a major step down. But compared to Disney's similar 'The Wild' that came out around the same time as this, Madagascar is certainly the better of the two. The quality of animation for the time is poor, on occasions it's borderline PS2 standard. And with the exception of the Penguins who steal the show, the voice work and humour from the main characters is tolerable but forgettable.

I don't really like the new style of animation-- where are all the good old hand animators anymore? Too much CGI is a bad thing, in my mind-- you have to know how to use it right. Despite this grudge, as an entertaining family film, Madacascar scores high. The penguins are great and steal the show, but the main plot is the kind of child-friendly message that all people can enjoy. Especially good is the use of humor that appeals to all age sets.
