Summary: Trevor is a 16 year old, sometimes-violent skinhead with no regard for authority, and would rather spend his time stealing cars than sitting in the detention centre to which he is sent. His social worker, Harry Parker, tries to do his best, but Trevor is only interested when there's something that he can get out of it. The authorities within the centre try to make Trevor conform to the norms of society, but he takes no notice, and would rather speak in a torrent of four-letter words and racial abuse. (imdb)

This examines the situation extremely well. You got this smart, but ultimately misguided teen and he's stuck in these facilities to try to correct him. The anti-establishment shit he spews is sometimes so spot-on, but yet he's still ultimately a completely racist dick. It shows the character as gray, and there's a great performance by Roth to bring him alive. It's a gritty, intelligent movie, that doesn't go far, but it makes logical sense.

If you've been following my reviews you'll know I _hate_ movies about pathetic fuckups. And this guy's a fuckup all right. But he isn't pathetic - he's anger-fueled, stubbornly deviant, nihilistic, sadomasochistic and at the same time smart and cunning. This richness of Trevor's persona is owed to the outstanding brilliance of Tim Roth's acting. Like its main character the film never gets anywhere, but I guess that's the whole point, innit?

"Bollocks!!!" That scene with the blackboard definitely sums up all such situations when you're 16: part of it true and part of it total crap.

Very smart movie following the failed attempts by the establishment to rehabilitate a juvenile delinquent. When the staff of an assessment center are authoritative with Trevor, this only fuels his rebelliousness. He craves the strict discipline, which serves to spur him on. The film portrays a corrective system which espouses conformity to rules, but fails, perhaps because it never tries to discusses ideas or feelings with the teen. Thank you Alan Clarke for discovering Tim Roth.
