An extraordinary work, Maldone manages to presage so many of the dominant themes in French cinema of the following decade. The cinematography, which includes a great deal of location work, is predominantly neo-realist in style, whilst the narrative has strong elements of poetic realism. As in many of Grémillon's later films, Maldone alternates between moments of great dramatic intensity and moments of calm, poignant reflection.

The framing of landscapes, in particular, is gorgeous and recalls the subject in French paintings of the previous century. Strong film with some very memorable images.

'How wonderful to be a free soul' is what the moral here is. There is a well communicated torment in being trapped with responsibility when all one want to do is feel the fresh air and simply live for the moment. I wouldn't say the story was brought forward in the best way. There were many times when one kept wanting more to happen, but all credit to director Jean Grémillon and the actors for the general mood of Maldone (1928).
