I don't give a flying fuck about Kevin Smith. In fact, fuck Kevin Smith. Fuck him and his piss-dribbling fan boys and his stupid friends that he puts in his movies. Jason Lee? I've seen more character in a rutabaga. And watching Claire Forlani "act" is like watching a retarded kid bathe... it just feels wrong.

This is the first Kevin Smith film I ever watched and my second favorite after Clerks. Jason Lee's delivery and comedic timeing is great here. I'm a little surprised by the hatred of this film by some. Kevin Smith invented the slacker manchild before Judd Apitow was even heard of.

Next 2 Clerks - its poverty-stricken twin - this proves audiences will forgive (& embrace) anything as long as u make them laugh, b/c even though this is a better-acted, better-looking, pricier reboot ("Dante" & "Randall" are in a mall now), it's nowhere near as funny & therefore, pales in comparison to its predecessor. Given the 2 films' overwhelming similarities & so many variables being controlled for, this also proves - all things even being UNEQUAL - nothing is more important than script.

Much-maligned Smith sophomore effort still doesn't work (even in the altered "extended version") because Smith is striking an uneasy compromise between freewheeling nerdgasms (which worked so well in CLERKS), while trying to fashion a solid narrative arc, which his characters stubbornly resist. There's some great stuff here in isolation (Smith and Mewes are clearly having a ball and the Doherty-Lee relationship is well wrought) but the revue format quickly becomes tiresome.

If Clerks focused more on physical comedy and less on dialogue, you would get this film. Something small yet significant is lost in that tradeoff, making Clerks the better film, but Mallrats is still no slouch in the laughs department.

Parts of this movie were hilarious, and the sidekick character was generally entertaining, but the main character and his relationship with his girlfriend and her father was boring and I never cared about it at all. Worth watching for the funny parts, and nothing terrible, but overall not a great movie.

Struck a certain chord with me when I saw it as a semi-nerdy teenager. Not sure it would have the same effect now as a slightly nerdy adult. It's worth noting that Kevin Smith always draws out Jason Lee's best work.

There isn't much I like about this movie, or Kevin Smith's movies in general. Here he gets in some decent jokes every now and then and Jay and Silent Bob are sometimes amusing, but other than that this is just pointless and forgettable.

It felt a bit forced compared to 'Clerks', I mean a bigger budget, "actors" and a more thought out plot. But I think it was the spontaneity & originality of the first movie that was lacking here. It's definitely a lot more PC too, which was kind of annoying. Pretty forgettable stuff.

Kevin Smith is a god. Brodie is one of the best characters ever!!! He is both dispicable and lovable at the time. This movie opened up a window for small, independent directors to make great movies with low budgets and get the recognition they deserve. If it wasn't for this movie, many people would have missed Clerks.

Jason Lee is the standout here in an otherwise unmemorable feature. London is pretty painful to watch, the main love story is silly and uninteresting. Some of the minor characters (Jay and Silent Bob, Lafours) are pretty funny, though.

Mallrats is a funny little film about a couple of nerds who break up with their girlfriends and then try to win back their hearts, all while spending a day wandering the local mall and encountering silly supporting characters. It's enjoyable but it does little to make you feel, think, or even care. The laugh-per-minute ratio is fine, and if that's all you're looking for you won't be disappointed, but if you want a film with a little more meat on its bones, you'll want to search somewhere else.

I love Mallrats but it doesn't stand up to the test of time. At the time, it was unusual to have a movie with nerd references which is part of the reason why I loved this movie so much. The story is not good and even at the time I knew as much. The acting has some bright spots with Jason Lee, Michael Rooker, Priscilla Barnes, and Joey Lauren Adams. Other parts of the cast were average Claire Forlani (who I really like), Shannen Doherty, and Jeremy London. Ben Affleck was boring throughout.

I liked this film. Sure there is some awkward dialogue and even more awkward delivery but there is a great bit of heart and charm slapdashed into the weirdo characters that inhabit Smith's universe. Plus he was pushing comics in films before there really were any good comic book films.

Kevin Smith follows up his smash surprise "Clerks"(1994) with something closer to farce than clever independent comedy. However Jason Lee as the sarcastic slacker comic book nerd seeking refuge in the only place some loser from the 90's knew, the mall, is fantastic. In addition to an excellent supporting performance from Michael Rooker and a young Ben Afflek. Along with some of the usual "View Askewniverse" characters, there is a Stan Lee cameo before it was the norm.

A completely underrated comedy by the arbiter of suburban hipness and angst, Kevin Smith. The writing snaps and crackles like a dry log on a raging fire as we follow the mis adventures of 2 NJ slackers. Reeling from the sudden (almost simultaneous) dumpings by their girlfriends, Brodie and TS seek solace in the on place they know they can - The Mall. Chaos, crazy characters and hilarity ensue!

Smith's desire to mix the 'indie' sensibility of Clerks with the beats and conventions of a teen comedy was a commercial failure, and the problems plaguing all of his attempts to align his geekiness with mainstream sensibilities began here. It's also an exceedingly ugly film containing every 90's fashion crime known to man. But his View Askew 'vision' was really cemented with Mallrats, which made slacker icons out of Jay and Silent Bob and launched the career of Jason Lee, who steals the show.

I grew up watching Kevin Smith movies, but going back to them is always trouble; they're never as good, or as clever, or as funny as I remember, with one notable exception - Mallrats. Generally considered one of Smith's worst, i've always enjoyed Mallrats. It's a simple story centered around some likeable and endearing characters and features some genuinely funny moments, it doesn't try to do too much and it hasn't suffered with age like so many of Smith's other movies. Smith's worst? His best.

My fourth Kevin Smith movie watching experience, and one of the better ones. I have been underwhelmed by Clerks, but this feels better. The acting is still bad, but not as bad.
