Summary: Based on Daniel Defoe's novel Robinson Crusoe, but reverses the roles, portraying Crusoe as a blunt, stiff Englishman, while the native he calls Man Friday is much more intelligent and empathic. The film can be regarded as being critical of western civilization, against which it draws an idealizing picture of Caribbean tribal life. (wikipedia.org)

it's actually a pretty good movie, o'toole makes a decent crusoe and roundtree is better as friday. it could have used a rewrite, and it attempts to make a moral point at the end, but all that gets through is that pacific islanders have a better belief system than europeans.
