Gable somewhat miscast. And the lengthy sob-story prologue was a bit much. But Powell and Loy provide a fitting debut here for their ongoing role as arguably the screen's greatest couple (and of course it was interesting to see them do drama). Thought it would've been better off without the last few minutes; I expected Powell walking down the jail corridor to be the last shot of the film. Oh yeah, and the blonde ditzbrain was quite funny.

Typical well-made studio film of the mid-thirties. As usual, "One Shot" Woody Van Dyke keeps things moving along.

W.S. Van Dyke is usually great at getting something special out of his projects, but with this he fails compared to what he has to work with. He's got a star cast of Clark Gable, William Powell and Myrna Loy, yet makes them mediocre compared to the level they usually on. Don't get me wrong, Gable and Powell are good, but I guess it was the way it was presented that took away any climaxes and it just got worse the longer it went. It's still interesting with the first pairing of Powell & Loy.

Everything seemed mediocre about this mediocre-drama.
