Where Anderson's films can ring a little false, Baumbach is always truthful. This is a movie about horrible, dysfunctional people being cruel to one another, and sometimes it hurts, and sometimes it feels like far too much, but it never feels cheap or forced. it's good is what i'm saying

Nicole Kidman is completely insufferable, as is Jennifer Jason Leigh in the beginning. Normally this would be a bad thing to say about two main characters in a film, but despite Kidman being a manipulative superbitch through the movie she was still an intriguing character. Black does a surprisingly good job, and this film shows that you don't always like the characters to recognize the good acting performances. Not as good as The Squid and the Whale, but it's definitely worth a viewing.

Not nearly as fleshed out as Squid and the Whale. The movie starts off awkwardly as if the audience is thrust into the movie halfway. Due to this the characters seem underdeveloped yet overly complex. The pacing of the movie also seemed awkward as the movie dragged unbearably in places. For the most part the acting was decent with one glaring exception. Claude (Zane Pais) gave a terrible performance and came off extremely annoying. I'm not surpised to find out this was his only movie.

This needed a stronger narrative to tie it together. As it stands, it's just about people with severe mental issues not having the care they need.

Kidman...Mega-Bitch of the Year Award Winner. While the film is probably better than I though, the characters are so dislikable that it is hard to see through them. The two sisters were great, and Jack Black was oddly entertaining.

Another subtle and interesting character study from Baumbach, but this one is the most relentlessly bleak of the bunch. Kidman's eponymous character is difficult to take from go to woe. The whole movie perhaps assaults the viewer a little too much, but there is always plenty going on to hold the interest as well. A second viewing could result in a higher score.

Noah Bambauch makes it easy to dislike his films. Problem is, he also makes it easy for New York's media elite to praise them.

Noah Baumbach certainly knows how to write characters with complex relationships with one another and isn't afraid of making his characters unsympathetic. Whether that's a good or bad thing I don't know. All I know is there were a lot of moments in this film that left me unsatisfied.

Baumbach is such a great writer--that's really his strength. Certain scenes were reminiscent of Bergman in the way these people cut each other down in one sentence. Liked the humor sprinkled throughout, and the ending was appropriate, if not a channel (at least in form) of Darjeeling (I wonder which was written first?). However, I think Baumbach is too keen on dragging us through the muck. I mean really--does every character need to have some dark and dastardly sexual issue?

This isn't as strong as The Squid and the Whale (predictably, Baumbach doesn't have much to say) but still somewhat decent. I didn't care for the ending and Nicole Kidman was pretty annoying a lot but Jack Black saved it from being terrible.
