It's Paddy Chayefsky's script that deserves attention here. A didactic film with an old-fashioned morality for which getting married is everything, but lots of good dialogue and nice to watch.

About as good as the television play. While Chayefsky's story certainly holds emotional truth, it's almost too well put together. That is, I don't remember the writing in the original being this obvious. Maybe it was; I'm not sure. Borgnine carries the movie very well in the lead role. Maybe it's just me but, curiously, Marty's mother's thick accent reminded me of Jar Jar Binks's - which was weird.

Good acting all-around, particularly from Borgnine, and writing; however, not good enough to overcome a few doldrums in the story. I wouldn't call Marty a masterpiece, but you could do worse.

once again i go into a movie penned by chayefsky assuming i'd get blown away, but there was no awesomeness to be had. this is a very sad thing considering i love borgnine and the marty's character.

See it. Charming. Wonderful

I like this director, he's got balls. Long takes, plenty of beautiful night-time location shots, a good sense of pace. It doesn't always work, but when it does it's very impressive.

11 Kasim 2008 - White House, Kas

Very good screenplay with some honest and realistic dialogue. The real highlight of this film is Borgnine and Blair. Their night together contains some of the warmest moments I've seen, incredibly moving stuff. Both of them are fantastic and have chemistry of a sort you rarely see. But I didn't care too much for the rest of it. All the stuff with his aunt and his bonehead friends didn't interest me at all. But the Marty/Clara scenes are so genuine, endearing and sweet that it's still worth it.

Marty is an absolutely wonderful movie that deals with inadequacy in a mature and enchanting way. Two people who are down on their luck, a little older than they want to be, and can't seem to find a mate for all the world and they finally meet each other.

Great film.

Blair Brown is actually quite attractive. I like this movie anyway

a simple, straightforward story about two lonely hearts looking for love.....recommended

Aw Marty, when you getting married, you're 34 and all your younger brothers are married, you ought to be ashamed of yourself. What a fantastic movie, the plot is sparse but the character of Marty fills the void many times over. The arc is so honest and ends so perfectly that it alone makes a good movie. Then you add in all the little jokes, offhand remarks and life struggles and the film rushes forth to near perfection.

Not as much story here as I had hoped. The conflict in the third act was fairly lacking. Borgnine is fantastic though.

Pleasant little movie with a nice heart. The plot is a bit spare, but Borgnine fills it out quite well with his genial performance.

You can always count on Paddy Chayefsky for good dialogue, and several things about this story surprised me too. The acting is excellent, especially by Borgnine, and his Italian mother amused me. A very sweet film.
