Nice little ditties about adamant boys and ravishing girls. On the surface. I just can't be made to think under it.

Extremely stylistic with my favourite flourish being some of the conversations where, very much like an interview, we are only shown one character's face - it catches the characters at their most vulnerable as they are made to bare all their beliefs before us. Godard decries pop politics and pop culture, but importantly not youth, as we see one, represented by men, and the other, represented by women, living together and having to put up with each other's differing priorities and beliefs.

Almodovar is celebrated for his poignant explorations of gender identity, and this is no exception. He should use spell-check, though.

A mid-movie proposal palm-off ("Let's discuss it later") is but one exchange in Masculin Feminin that epitomises Godard's act of revolution -- his resistance to established narrative principles and cinematic norms. It's a work of seductive daring, whose politics (social and sexual) excite and enrapture in a way even the best non-New Wave films of the '60s never could. A multi-faceted masterclass in how to make a visually and dramatically intoxicating motion picture, it's a glorious work of art.

The thing that bothers me about this film is the ending. After such a joyous movie (If Breathless is jazz music, Masculin, Feminin is pop music), he hits you with that cold final dialogue. WHAT A BASTARD!! But really this is a great movie. The scenes at the cinema are golden Godard.

The in-your-face misogyny doesn't help a film that seems overly enamored with itself and it's political messages. Technically, this film is pretty much flawless, but it's proof that movies can often be more (or less) than the parts that make them.
