If your kids pick this film up at a movie store or something, do yourself the favor of smacking it out of their hand with gusto. It'll be satisfying to you, and they'll learn a valuable lesson: Don't torture you parents with stupid movies. Have the kiddies read the book if they're interested in the story, because then you won't have to deal with it. Total crap!

One of those films that has everything going for it in terms of cast, ability and production values. However, it doesn't cut the mustard when compared to the Roal Dahl book. Worth seeing but a B movie at best.

The narrative here is pure, kid-minded, free-spirited fun: A cute children vs. adults motif ("I'm big, you're small") is filled out by a few hilariously exaggerated antagonists (see DeVito [puzzlingly also the amiable narrator] as the brash book-hating dad, Ferris as the child-throwing principal), an adorable protagonist with great gifts of genius and magic to live vicariously through, and many satisfying moments of child rebellion (see the ridiculous but tear-jerking chocolate cake triumph).

One of the true gems of the 90s'; Danny DeVito's directing can be hit and miss, but here is a sure fire hit embedded in the minds of every boy and girl who had the good fortune to grow up in the 90s. Beautifully adapted from Roald Dahl's eponymous book [maintaining as much of Dahl's trademark darkness as his charm and humour], this film is a real treat! Watch it, or you'll end up in the Chokey!

I watched this more than once. But thats only for Mr. Dahl. This film has only a light resemblance to the essence of the book. The film could have been a little more darker and less shamelessly caricature-ish (for example the parents-I wasn't worried about Matilda while she lived with her ego-crushing parents)

Danny Devito is miscast (a self-cast miscast?), but Matilda does its best to live up to the classic Roald Dahl book. It fails, but kids will still find it entertaining... if they haven't read the book.

more generous for kid movies, though I'd think it risks being way more popular for kids between 7 and 12 years old who like reading. The action, imagination, and sets and costumes can still interest the others. The principal makes for an unusual but good "bad guy" for a kid movie. Watching as an adult, one both appreciates and is more shocked by the parents.

At times, the film can be disjointed and a bit too unpleasant to watch, especially with the depiction of grown-ups in this story, with the exception of Matilda's schoolteacher. It's a bit too mean, scary, and disturbing at times. If you analyse it, it's glorified child abuse that goes unpunished for the most part. But kids seem to love it, and I can see why. It's fun, colourful, sweet, Matilda's powers allow for some decent slapstick and creativity, and it's, in the end, very heartwarming.

There's some surprisingly strong directorial choices, and it's clear that DeVito has some clear borrowing from German expressionism. However, despite being very fun to watch the performances completely lack any subtelty and the story has no nuance or depth to it. Passibly entertaining family film.

The great irony with this movie is that I found myself liking all the characters I was suppose to hate more than the characters I was suppose to like. Pam Ferris and Danny DeVito were fantastic in this movie and stole the show. I think what bogs it down is the one-dimensional, dull nature of Matilda and her friends and a plot that's overly sappy and cheesy (in the wrong way). I would have loved a dedicated comedy movie focused on Ferris and Danny DeVito, but oh well.

There's a massive group of people who adore Matilda. I mean they fucking adore Matilda. Now, I've seen this movie a handful of times, and every time I've just been overcome with a headache-inducing sense of eerie mediocrity. I say eerie because I don't know what this movie wants to do. It's shockingly dark (even violent towards young children) one minute and sickly sentimental the next. It's an uncomfortable juxtaposition that's just so unpleasant to watch. I don't get it.

I just couldn't get over how cruelly the children were treated throughout the entire film. Yeah, the baddies got what they deserved in the end, but it wasn't really an enjoyable ride. It's too bad, the performances were good and I liked the aesthetics, but it wasn't enough to overcome the story.

Matilda is fun, but predictable. The good characters are good, maybe too much so and the bad are impressively bad. You know that good is going to triumph in a movie like this. If you like that kind of movie you'll enjoy the odd, over-the-top, but fantastic take on Dahl's Matilda. If you don't, then the movie will probably not be your favorite.

Top badass moment? Matilda reads books; books are badass, although I noticed there was no Thomas Hardy, a huge oversight. A neglected child genius with borderline abusive parents and advanced telekinetic abilities isn’t discovered by Professor X; so she just uses her skills to stick a hat to her dad's head and vandalise a TV. I’m also minded to conclude that if more schools were like Crunchem Hall we’d have less whiny Snowflake Millennials to tolerate. 1 cat, no chainsaws or decapitations.

A bit too run of the mill, and it has a tendency to be really irksome when there's no need for it to be. The characters are almost impressively one dimensional, and absolutely no character development really takes place. It has some memorable scenes and performances, but the assembly is fairly ridiculous. While most Dahl stories are over the top in a fantastical, magical way, Matilda manages to go over the top with neglect and abuse in addition, and it loses its edge.
