Just a really good time. Plenty of chuckles and enough fun twists to leave you smiling - and sometimes, brother, that's all you need.

A perfect film for having on at the bar with the sound off. Hi-jinks and action set pieces make this perfect for almost paying attention to. Why the low rating than? Whelp, I tried paying attention.

Absolutely hilarious, and yes it's a western. It has the same humor as the Lethal Weapon movies and the unusual setting for a comedy going for it. If you haven't seen it then see it immediately.

Maverick is a very humorous and original western. Mel Gibson plays the title character, a charismatic, card playing gunslinger, and he turns out to be a really enjoyable hero to watch. James Garner, James Coburn, and an excellent Jodie Foster as a conning femme fatale make for a terrific supporting cast. Maverick is extremely entertaining and rewatchable. Awesome!

If anyone was going to reprise the role Garner made famous, it had to be Gibson, and he did it masterfully. Well cast, well written, and well acted all around (especially Foster). A great romp through the old west. This movie is on the opposite end of the scale from Wild Wild West.

How many Westerns can be described as genial, good-natured, and engaging? This is among the best of the sub-sub genre of the lighthearted, lovable Western. Mel Gibson has never been more good-humored and charming (!!), and there is genuine chemistry between him and Jodie Foster, playing a fellow gambler. The supporting cast is uniformly good, especially Graham Green as a "civilized savage". He is Bret Maverick's con-frère (so to speak) - his soul-brother, friend, and partner in crime.

I think if they would have just did a TV series remake, it would have worked better. As a film... it was cute. But it felt very episodic, even as a movie, and I just feel they failed to capture the charm of the TV series. Still, Mel Gibson makes a perfect Maverick.

The triple-crosses are a bit much to keep track of when you're drunk but the performances give it more warmth and depth than most movies about con artists.

Unimpressive. I couldn't tell if this movie wanted to be taken seriously s a comedy or as a halfway-serious film. Its lack of identity hurts it in the end.

Mel Gibson is great comedic entertainment here in a very funny take on the Western. While the movie suffers minor plot jumbles and twists and scurries about in sheer goofiness, Gibson is continuously spot-on, very likable and a joy to watch.

Some kind of unholy fusion of Western Americana and moleitau, Maverick's tone mostly fails but does have a few marvelously successful scenes (anything involving Native Americans). Part of the schism is, the script is fine enough, but the directing is a disaster. The ADR is atrocious.

Lackadaisical update of the fondly remembered '60s TV show relies heavily on personal charm to carry a thin storyline that moseys along much too slowly -- and much too long. Gibson is fun as a wily cardsharp, and the cast is peppered with familiar faces from the world of vintage TV Westerns and contemporary country music.

The comedy tends to draw you out of the time the film is set in as it all seems very current, but overall it's good fun. The amount of stumbling blocks along the way is probably it's biggest problem, as it piles them on. Semi-spoiler: During the intensity of a poker tournament, why not pile upon some extra tension by adding a bolted room door to Mel Gibson's worries during the 1-hour break in the finals. No. There's tense, and then there's plain annoying. A lot of it's the latter.

Where Eastwood's "Unforgiven" is the definitive eulogy to the more serious Western, this is the golden sunset of those comedic Westerns such as the Trinity series. Solidly humourous all the way through, with many a nod to the classics, it's a thoroughly enjoyable film.

Handsomely mounted star driven vehicle is a blockbuster comedy in the guise of a western rather than a legitimate entry in the genre. Its tongue in check approach has no satirical aspirations, and it gets by on the charm of its leads and the winning chemistry of Gibson and Foster, who became good friends while filming. It passes the time, and fans of prime era Gibson could certainly do worse, but it is instantly forgettable.

Bunch of western-y shenanigans with Mel Gibson… amusing sort of atmosphere and Gibson always an entertaining screen presence. Not really much of a story though, just kind of a hangout / “assorted, often disconnected stuff happens” movie.
