A very hokey, old-fashioned, maudlin comedy that hasn't stood the test of time at all. Its brand of humor does nothing for modern audiences, unlike later Western comedy "Blazing Saddles". It's a decent premise by itself, but has absolutely lifeless execution and jokes, with no frills or creativity. Even John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara can't do much to save the viewer from deep boredom.

This germ of an interesting ideological Western (libertarian cattle baron Wayne supports Indians against big-government governor) becomes a geriatric Wild West version of "The Taming of the Shrew" ruined by the way McLaglen's direction magnifies all John Ford's minor faults (sentimentality, sexism, alcoholic humor, senseless donnybrooks, overplayed comedy, telegraphed punches and punchlines) without sharing even one of his great virtues. Wayne and O'Hara--for once--are lacking in chemistry.
