Okay so Criticker thought I was only gonna give this like a 70. I get the criticism about the dialogue and shit, but honestly, how do you think 14 year old inner-city and middle-American teenagers talk? Yeah, pretty much. It can be annoying but the point here is a sense of realism, not comfort. And a lot of this movie is not comfortable. The scene with Megan's life story especially highlights some dark shit that some teenagers do face. It's more than a cautionary tale, it's a disturbing triumph.

I am definitely glad that the movie is making its message clear but I was so disturbed by it. Everyone needs to watch this, it's graphic and brutal but it needs to be watched.

While I'll agree that this movie has an important story to tell and will make parents want to quit their ISPs and vet all their daughters' friends, it's so poorly made that I couldn't help laughing at scenes where I most certainly shouldn't have been. I'll give the 2 leads the benefit of the doubt, but everyone else was awful--the wooden friends, the fake dad, the porn star reporter, the re-enactment of the re-enactment, and the torturing predator...who mispronounces 'torturing' when online.

I'm giving this a green rating because Michael Goi pulled off something that no other horror filmmaker in the last five years has done: legitimately disturbed me. I chuckled through Human Centipede and slept like a baby an hour later, but Megan Is Missing actually made my heart race and my stomach churn, and I turned on the lights when the movie was over. However, it's held back by some decidedly spotty acting and especially the borderline-comic news report scenes.

Another good demonstration of how you can make an effectively horrifying piece of cinema on a low budget. On the other hand, while a labor of love, its flaws glare. The realism is compromised by quite a lot of contrivances, most of them stemming from the devout adherence to the "all found footage" ideal. Aside from excusing the cheap cinematography, it's a device meant to hook the audience into believing. Alas, too many speciously convenient shots make it double-edged, as it so often is.

It's kind of disgusting the way this movie exploits and abuses these girls to tell a rather pedestrian morality tale about internet predators. I'm not even really sure if that was the primary purpose of this. I'd honestly be inclined to call this 'torture porn', but that might be too awful a description when twelve year-olds are involved. Some scenes drag on for far too long, and the acting is terrible. Still, it's undeniably effective and the final moments are genuinely horrific.

Deductions for every single word of dialogue, the plot, the characters, those stupid fucking news broadcasts and that ludicrous reenactment scene. Extra points for the super-creative internet predator guy and his barrel disposal approach.

Oh god, those images... There are a few scenes in this movie that are pitch perfect, including the last 22 minutes (you'll see). This is disturbing, it builds and builds, and the visual style (the 'hand held' style that makes it look like real footage) is perfect for this. I can't watch this again, but when I was watching it I was really involved. I was grossed out, the characters felt genuine (props to the lead actresses) and I felt awful. It shook me to my core. Fuck this movie... I love it.
