I can easily say that “Melancholia” is the most depressing film I have ever seen. It’s gloomy, haunting, uncomfortable, and categorically convincing with its subject matter. If you’re not in a good mood before you plan on watching this and/or you’re irrationally afraid of the apocalypse and the end of the world... don’t watch it. There are many detractors that I can list off warding you away from the emotional roller coaster that this film puts you on, but there are far more pros than cons.

Mental illness transcends logic - it strikes the rich and poor equally. The clinically depressed feel like they're living on a different plane of existence from "normal" humanity. In the film, as the world inches closer toward destruction, Justine (Dunst) finds strength and clarity as her heart finally matches her environment, while the rest of humanity, who wore their emotional strength so flippantly, crumble away into a state strikingly similar to...depression. A beautiful, exhilarating film.

Weird, hard to see at moments film, which is worth watching for several reasons: The gorgeous opening. The beautiful cinematography and score. Kirsten Dunst makes an extraordinary performance of a depresive person. Gainsbourgh is great, as well. And the film gets more intensity in the second half.

I hate it when arthouse directors reach the point where they don't even have to put any effort in what they are doing to be the talk of the town. There are good things in Melancholia - visual style, some acting, good bits of the story - but ultimately it feels undercooked. I think Lars should spend more time on the scripts, because lately his fils seems to go downhill.

obviously depressing. I wish it would have been executed better, because you don't get good performances like this all the time. I think if this movie is done like sunshine or even tree of life, it could have been one of my favorites of the year. however, it just didn't.

Melancholia is beautiful portrayal of gloom. While slow moving it didn't ever feel boring. The way the scenes played out only helped to further the bleak feel of the film. Excellent acting and superb cinematography.

I always have good luck with movies that open with long wedding sequences. This one makes Another Earth look like the product of children. Kirsten Dunst again proves what an under-appreciated talent she is.

The film studies extreme depression without coming to any conclusions or offering up a cause, and without any other direction for it to go, it tosses us into a genre film. The performances and cinematography were brilliant, however.

Not as bold as Trier's other films. I'm used to his over-confidence, but this one's a bit of a tame art-house picture that kind of just flickers in and out for the majority of the film. The first half is patient, subtle, and nuanced; the second half falls into Antichrist territory and becomes heavy-handed, confused, mean-spirited garbage. And yet, unlike other films by Trier (including the awful Antichrist), it isn't even memorable.

I don't see why this movie is so well-liked. There's really no point to it as far as I can tell. A planet is approaching earth and looks to destroy everything. The first half of the movie is about a bride who doesn't care about anything at her own wedding, and the second half is about the family freaking out over the possibility of death. I found it all very boring. The only positive for me is a great performance by Charlotte Gainsbourg and some nice visuals.

A flashy exercise in nihilism-fueled hopelessness, yet it lacks the emotional punch of Trier's own Dancer in the Dark or the debilitating bleakness of Haneke's The Seventh Continent. Sure is pretty though.

Lars Trier has staged the end of the world in a very particular way. With very little talk and action, the atmosphere of despair and folly is beautifully achieved. Kirsten Dunst's performance is brilliant!

At first you don't really get how the first part fits with the second one. And during the film Dunst annoys you with such a horrible behaviour. So basically it does hit your emotions and your mind (what the good film suppose to do, right?). But it wasn't the best way to do it.

"Melancholia" is a drastically different film from "Antichrist" that is a look at depression and the relationship between two sisters but also happens to involve the end of the world. Sporting a haunting soundtrack, some of the best visuals I've seen all year and a fantastic cast, although the star is clearly Dunst who redeems herself for everything she's ever been in. The final scene is probably one of my favorite scenes in any movie ever. One of the best films of the year.

Noted snob favorite Lars von Trier (who, I hasten to mention, added the "von" to his name in film school to sound more artistic) does what noted snob favorite Lars von Trier does best: Make cold, pretentious cinema for the sort of people who respond to contrary opinions about film by going, "Heh, not everyone can understand it. Transformers 3 is probably more your speed." At least this one has sets and isn't some Dogme 95 bullshit, which puts it one up on Manderlay and Breaking the Waves.

Lars von Trier says it’s okay to be depressed! Cast off the shackles of consumerism and accepted societal norms and embrace the void that we all rocket towards with every passing second! The end of everything has never looked so beautiful.

Visually very amazing to see. This has to be the best acting I've ever seen Kirsten Dunst do. It is the best way to show how depressed people take depressing situations differently than the average human being. That's what I love about independent films-they take time telling the story a lot better than mainstream films.

Unfortunately no return to form for Lars, following the hugely disappointing Antichrist, Melancholia unfortunately fails to regain the highs of the 'golden heart trilogy'. Although excellently acted, in particular by Dunst, there is a permanent sense that there should be something 'more' in the film. Although at points startlingly lovely to look at, the transparency and lack of substance of the plot leave you yearning for better days, but not, I suspect, how Lars intended.

(spoiler) The 'second orbit' of Melancholia just doesn't fit in any physics system I know of... in fact, the whole sci-fi aspect of this story is terrible and is (generally) absurdly incongruous to the mood of this movie. Boring at parts. Achingly beautiful at other points.

15 Novembre 2011 - El personatge em resulta antipatic, incomprensible i no em desperta cap interès.

Von Trier's latest effort is a fantastic Wagnerian work that is a good gateway film into the auteur's filmography. Its meditations on the end of the world and use of Romantic literary elements play out in a truly enjoyable way peppered with a healthy dose of some of the director's best comedy writing. Dunst is absolutely fantastic, but so is the critically overlooked performance by Kieffer Sutherland.
