Summary: "Memories" is made up of three separate science-fiction stories. In the first, "Magnetic Rose," three space travelers are drawn into an abandoned spaceship that contains a world created by one woman's memories. (imdb)
Magnetic Rose is lengthy and boring. Stink Bomb is a black comedy that is a lot of fun. Cannon Fodder shows a dark dystopia shot through one sweeping long take; I consider it the most memorable and exceptional short of the three.
The first part is easily the best, with some very nice hard sci-fi elements (zero-G ohhhhhhhhhhhh). The following two are less impressive, with part two seeming incongruous and utterly unbelievable (though fun) and part three being rather ugly and difficult to relate to, even though it's nicely satirical. Overall good, but part one probably would have worked better as a stand-alone feature, if the plot arc was tweaked a bit.
The first is decent, second one showcases a great premise with comic relief very well, and the end piece is something I'll never forget. Otomo really creates something here, displaying a long take technique I've never seen an anime duplicate, beautiful artwork, and one of the most genuine visions of dystopia - all in under 30 minutes. Masterful.
What attracts me to an anime is the intimacy that Japanese artists seem to have with the imaginary. This ability gives originality, strength and truth to their work, as if each story would open a new window to a parallel universe, a place beyond time and space, full of surprises and with its own logic. "Memories" is another example of that mastery, made by some of the great masters of anime.
The first part, "Magnetic Rose", is amazing. The other two don't really match up to it though "Stink Bomb" is kind of humorous but still weak and frustrating (to me). The long take (almost single take) "Cannon Fodder" is a technical feat that I haven't seen in any other animation though the story is rather light and not particularly creative. The strength of "Magnetic Rose" basically covers for the weaknesses the others have but if it had just been that alone I would have rated it higher.
Three short films with a lot of style and great soundtracks. Magnetic Rose has a classic scifi short story feeling to it. Stink Bomb is simply fun, and you'll constantly be thinking "we'll that's not going to go well", most likely out loud. Cannon Fodder goes nowhere but it doesn't have to
I expected more after those ratings. The short´s aren´t really bad but far away from awesome. There´s much better stuff outside. The best one is the first story " Magnetic Rose"
All 3 shorts stand out in their own way, but it's hard to find them fitting into a cohesive whole. Kon shows his usual reality-bending brilliance, while Otomo's too-short coda is a piece of art in its own right.
Very good first, terrible second and absolutely brilliant third part. Sadly, the third is about 10 minutes and the second takes ages, but for Otomo's part alone, it's highly recommended.
The opening story "Magnetic Rose" is stunning on animation, story and directing. The best of three. "Stink Bomb" is stunningly animated as well. The story goes mainly excellent, but ties to surprise in the end without success. "Cannon Fodder" is well animated too, but it's more moody story. The Nazi undertone is clear and I liked the parallel world idea. The story does not rise itself on the level of the others.
