Mesmerising and remarkably beautiful. The dream logic here is both playful and creepy, whilst the imagery is utterly captivating. If I'm honest I prefer it to Un Chien Andalou - Meshes might as not be quite as well made perhaps, but it has a more startling effect on me.

Possibly dismissed as arty, looking at the date it was made makes me realize Deren invented "arty" before it was a cliche. The circular editing is still engaging and magnificent; a prime example of art in motion.

Groundbreaking in its day, the advance and use of techniques Deren pioneered in this film make it a more difficult watch today. While I can appreciate at an intellectual level the way Deren is cutting the film, using dream logic, and drawing a narrative arc primarily through symbols, it's hard to get truly excited about and connect with the film now. I think an expanded sense of the film's influence and being better versed in experimental film would aid enjoyment of Deren's work here.

"Co-directed by Deren. A short psychological study of a woman's fears and desires as related to herself and her lover. Dream-logic ties together a romantic flower, a key, and a kiss, all turning at times into a murderous knife, taunted by a person with a mirror for a face. Feelings of alienation, self-damaging fears, split personalities and desires are evoked from this masterpiece of surrealism."

Probably the best short-film that I have ever watched. A masterpiece, Meshes of the Afternoon does not only tell a story in such an abstract sense that only few films have done before, but also manages to reach a level of suggestness that no other film have reached before. A landmark for all mind-thrillers to come later.

Now I know where David Lynch got his idea for Lost Highway. This short film is often visually striking, but whatever it was trying to say, which seems to have something to do with a mental breakdown or fractured personalities or something like that, was of little interest to me. The musical score was pretty bad too, but it wasn't originally part of the film so I'll ignore that.

Fascinating film. It's daring but not good enough to get on my favourites list. Still, it's an experimental short with some striking imagery and since it is a short, it wouldn't take up much of your time anyways. Definitely the best that Deren did.

I don't care if others think it's pretentious. It's simple, and therefore inspiring to amateur filmmakers. And it got through to me. I was scared to the point of getting teary eyed.

To me, the most enjoyable aspects of this were the least meaningful ones, the aspects that least aspire to express anything. The opening scenes are aesthetically inspired, but the more Deren is present in the frame, with her modern-dance-like body language, and the more repetitious the mirrors, knives and keys - too obviously symbolic - the more pretentious and hollow the film becomes.
