Summary: This Japanese anime, set in the future, depicts a grand city-state populated by humans and robots, the cohabitants of a strictly segmented society. (Sony)
This film has far more personality than it has any right to. I can't remember a thing about the story, and the characters looked stupid, but the way everything was put together with the dixie-hokum soundtrack just made it transfixing. It's a Japanese New Orleans crazy mash-up love-child that somehow feels chill, homely and familiar. St. James Infirmary was amazing.
The only part that was impressive was the end, with Ray Charles playing over scenes of massive destruction. It doesn't bring anything new to the table and the story isn't that compelling. Also I'm not into anime generally, but I really disliked the overly childish design of the characters.
Spectacular Japanese anime with original story inspired by Fritz Lang's classic film. Opulent backdrops contrast with cartoony-looking lead characters, but dramatic storytelling and powerful visuals overcome film's shortcomings.
This futuristic Babel tower story starts with chaotic background and animation, but ends up with decent one. The main focus is on human characters and they are stunning. Unfortunately the combination of CGI effects and robotic animation with highly cartoonish human figures does not work good. Story is slow and most of the time anemic. Only the brilliant ending saves a lot.
It´s really a very good Movie.Nice animation an amazing futuristic style and lovely characters ( fifi for example ) makes this one worse to watch ( even more than one time ).The ending of that movie is so impressive. If you like animes and scifi you will like Metropolis. Otherwise you might be disapointed.
Somehow the breathtaking climax with great use of 'Can't Stop Loving You' doesn't quite lift this movie up to where it needs to be. Which is too bad, because with better storytelling this could have been a classic. It could have class. It could have been a contender. It could have been 'Ghost in the Shell' meets 'Metropolis' (Fritz Lang's, that is).
