What a joyous, wonderful example of classical Hollywood at its finest. It's not quite Lubitsch in subtlety, but not quite Hawks in overt comedy, either. Barrymore is fantastic, and I can safely say (with my heterosexuality intact) that I have a severe man-crush on young Don Ameche.

A fun 1930's comedy. It's quick paced, well acted and full of great dialogue. It also manages to avoid the biggest pitfall comedies of the era run into, which is wearing thin with the same joke. It's not deep, but it's wonderful entertainment.

This movie is an elegant, near perfect romantic comedy. Brackett and Wilder's screenplay is witty, Leisen's direction is sophisticated and smooth, and Ameche and Colbert--both underrated experts in light comedy--are very cute together. Astor and Barrymore are cute together too, and Barrymore (who reportedly could barely read his cue-cards) gives one of the greatest--and most subdued--performances of his career.

A fun screwball flick. Colbert and Ameche really have chemistry as two opposites who offset each other. It's well-written with a lot of clever scenarios, but I didn't find it to be a gut-buster. Even so, it is a very easy watch.

This screwball gem is terrifically entertaining throughout and, in short bursts now and then, supremely silly. In short, a joy to watch.

I'm finding that I like Colbert the more I see of her, and Don Ameche is a riot. There's scheming and imposters with a little touch of class consciousness in this slightly uneven comedy. But it is light, and every time it feels like it could come crashing down in the plots ridiculousness, an even more ridiculous twist, driven by the character's (and screenwriter Billy Wilder's) cleverness keeps it floating along.

Master screenwriters Brackett and Wilder craft an excellent script centring, in true Lubitschian fashion, around the machinations of aristocratic haves and enterprising have-nots. The tight story and abundance of entertaining wordplay are complemented by Leisen’s exuberant direction, and while Colbert and Barrymore are great fun, it’s Don Ameche who lights up the screen most brightly.

Starts out only mildly amusing, but powers home in the last 40 minutes with the reappearance of Ameche. He is great here and deserved much more screen time. It was also fun to see him as a young actor. There is some clever dialogue on occasion and despite some dull moments early it should leave you with a smile.

Great whenever Don Ameche is on screen (the last 45 minutes or so are hilarious) but weak otherwise.

not that lubitsch ever needed wilder, but wilder needs more than a pinch of lubitsch (or, yknow, the next best thing)

Very entertaining screwball comedy, full of witty dialogue, clever reversals, and class commentary. The screenplay by Wilder and Brackett is golden, some really funny zingers and the plot is beautifully constructed. Sparkling performances by Colbert, Ameche, Barrymore, and Astor. Even the photography was quite good for a movie of this ilk, especially the first 15 minutes with those rainy Parisian streets. I'm not usually a big fan of screwball, but this one rubbed me all the right ways.

I like the hilarity ensues part, but I found Colbert very obnoxious and it seems like she ends up with chubby-fluffy Ameche just because she is bored and a sequel to this movie would look like a Bergman drama.

Midnight is a good means to entertain you and to taste every phrase of the sharply cut script. Perfect example of the golden epoch.

Lucky Claudette Colbert being surrounded by some of Hollywood's top men at the time. Don Ameche, Francis Lederer and the ever hammy John Barrymore! A semi-Cinderella story of a broke chorus girl getting her world transformed byd Barrymore with a scheming plan. But then there is cab driver Ameche putting sticks into the plan... and the result is a joyful screwball comedy with tons of personality! Perhaps not my absolute favorite comedy, but it's up there with the classics of the screwball genre!
