Summary: At a run down theater in a sleepy suburban town, a group of friends attend the midnight screening of a 1970s cult horror film. These unsuspecting teenagers are unaware that the director and star of the movie made a bloody escape from a psych ward five years earlier and may still be on the loose. (imdb)

An interesting spin on the "killer in a theater" story, but it seems like we are just supposed to assume that the killer is magic and just leave it at that. Maybe they couldn't work out how the killer actually worked and decided that since it is just a slasher that it didn't really matter. To a certain extent, there is some truth to that... but I think some sort of back-story could have added a lot to the story.

This film demonstrated all 5 deadly sins of bad writing!
(1) The powers and limitations of the villain would change from scene to scene.
(2) The story was just a random stream of events without a motive or construct.
(3) False ending, false ending, false re-ending, etc...
(4) The story went from formulaic horror and climaxed in full-on nursery-rhyme cliche.
(5) The climax of the film occurred randomly without being driven by any lead character or the story.

"Midnight Movie is an entertaining piece of low-budget slasher cinema that succeeds despite some problems."

Low-budget horror films usually have poor acting and dumb dialogue (this is no exception), but can stand out if they have a knockout premise, unique visual style, and/or particularly creative kill scenes. Unfortunately this doesn't really meet any of those criteria - the premise isn't too bad, but it turns out just to be Texas Chainsaw Massacre meets Wes Craven (Scream/Nightmare); visually it's nothing new or exciting; all the death scenes are, in the words of Sarah Palin, "drill, baby, drill."

Highly derivative slasher flick set in a haunted movie theater. Every character is a stereotype who spews cliched lines like it was a contest among the cast. At one point I made a game of guessing the next lines of dialog, and was right on or very close several times. The killer has a cool look, but he is OBVIOUSLY just Jason Voorhees, Mike Myers, Leatherface and a zombie from Dawn of the Dead '78 thrown into a blender and poured into a pair of overalls. It's pretty bad, but I like bad.

It is pretty typical paint-by-numbers slasher fare. That being said, there was some novelty to the concept. I think in better hands with a bigger budget, this movie could have been something special. However, what we have to watch is not that bad...so give it a shot. Sure, everything about the movie is average to slightly lower, but I'll forgive that somewhat for the high points of the film.

not too much to enhance the already done-it-to-death style of the slasher flick, but it wasnt that badly made. i do always like it when movies come to life, even if it was just in a movie.
