Summary: A highly styled 'genre' film which can perhaps be seen as a pastiche of all gangster movies. Tom Reagan is the laconic anti-hero of this amoral tale which is also, paradoxically, a look at morals within the criminal underworld of the 1930s. Two rival gangs vie for control of a city where the police are pawns, and the periodic busts of illicit drinking establishments are no more than a way for one gang to get back at the other. Black humour and shocking violence compete for screen time as we question whether or not Tom, right-hand man of the Irish mob leader, really has a heart. (imdb)

Wouldn't have expected anything less than a great movie done by the Coen Brothers, didn't disappoint at all.

I liked this quite a bit, even though I'm not crazy about gangster movies. My only negative comment is that I found the score infuriating. It just sounded like your regular hacky Hollywood crap, which was distracting. Otherwise, quite good. I will probably spend many years trying to fully understand each Coen Brothers movie, which is a good thing. Miller's Crossing is yet another one that I have to add the the pile of ones I need to re-watch.

One of the best movies that the Coen brothers have done. The plot is good, the period setting is exploited to great effect, and most of the characters are engaging. The plot turns got convoluted at points and I sometimes had a hard time figuring out what was happening to who, but the movie held my interest throughout.

this is a tremendous neo-noir movie. dark, gritty, and unflinchingly sadistic in all the right places. top notch acting, directing, and of course since it's a coen brothers movie writing. byrne does an absolutely stunning job, and all the major players are completely on top of their game--i simply cant find any fault in this movie, it is truly a masterpiece.

I had a hard time understanding the backgrounds on all the characters, and who was connected with who. But there are some nice performances by Byrne and J.E. Freeman. I especially grew to enjoy Freeman's role as the dark character, The Dane. With Byrne I just liked his smart-mouthed responses throughout. Overall one of the better Coen Brother movies that I have seen. Hold onto your hat.

When you turn on Miller's Crossing, the Coens immediately catapult you into a stylish, handsome world already waist-deep in a thick plot. From then on, not one marvelously-shot frame is wasted - it's all fast-talking, tense story. It's one of their more serious ventures, but it's also one of their best.

The Coens do a prohibition era gangster flick. Byrne comes off as impenetrable as the seemingly amoral antihero protagonist (his blank stare speaks volumes), but excellent acting (especially from Turturro), unbridled violence, great set pieces, and patent Coen Bros dark humor keep the film itself from being impenetrable. The "epic" hubris of the gangster films of Coppola and Scorsese is totally subverted by the bleak noirish tone and anti-crime meditation. "Look in your heart..."

Stylish, brilliantly shot, well performed and with a water tight script, this is just another film in the Coen's collective work of brilliance. For me its the casting in this movie that lifts it to another level. Everyone fits their role perfectly, but manages to bring own unique non-stereotypical quality to their role aswell. This may not be the Coen's most surreal or enigmatic work, (although it does have its moments) but it is undoubtably one of the finest mobster flicks ever made.
