A comedy that takes the cliched premise "opposites attract" to ridiculous heights in this romance between Rowlands the assistant museum curator and Cassel the parking lot attendant. The movie continues to show us how improbable and inappropriate this romance really is (and how odd these two people really are), blessing it all nonetheless, and in the process creating a romantic comedy that does what all romantic comedies should do: it celebrates the mysterious and creative possibilities of life.

Cassavetes turns the romantic comedy on its head, using quirky and eccentric characters but depicting them practically. It's definitely his funniest achievement. The characters, despite their irrationalities, are so charming that you can't help but love them.

Minnie never expected someone like Moskowitz to walk in to her life, and after her first meeting with him never expected someone like Moskowitz to stay in her life, making their eventual emotional intimacy all the more fulfilling and startlingly delightful. In its revealing of people's flaws it finds moments where all you can do is laugh, because not laughing is too depressing, and because how absurd we humans can be is, frankly, kind of funny, as well as achingly sad and endlessly interesting.

The second best Cassavetes movie, after A Woman Under the Influence. It directly confronts the paradigm of romance in 'The Movies', basically shredding it to pieces. Featuring characters so pathetic and flawed no one besides Cassavetes would ever dream of putting them on screen, Minnie and Moskowitz takes one step beyond "warts and all" naturalism and social realism, crossing over into a kind of lowlife-emphasizing mannerism. Which is precious. A sad, funny, tremendously insightful movie.

I'm not really one for the quirky romance but this just has too much going for it. Cassavetes realism? check. Prominent Rowlands role? check. Cassel bouncing off walls, sporting a wicked moustache? check. I can't help but get with it.

A very different and original love story that shatters all the rules of romance movies and has some sweet editing and cool cinematography. Seymour Cassel also sports one of the best mustaches ever.
