There's a lot of interesting moments but the overall dramatic effect is a bit maudlin. Korine is great at creating bizarre circumstances and whimsical imagery but he's always had great difficulty in bringing it together in a coherent way. Mister Lonely is no different than his other work. It also seems like his vision is much better when operating on a shoestring budget instead of the 8 million he had here. Even with its flaws Diego Luna is excellent in this.

I love the premise (among the most bizarre ever to be delivered on so truly), the vibrant, lightly experimental style, self-aware bouts of melodramatic performance, and Harmony Korine's singular weirdness. I'm not sure *how* the skydiving nuns fit in but I wanna say they fit *somehow*. Korine probably had an idea he couldn't let go but couldn't develop more fully. And anyway it's not like I'm going to complain when Werner Herzog shows up.

Mister Lonely is an offshoot of our celebrity-mad culture, like the National Enquirer morphing into The Maury Povich Show.

dividing movie. less straightforward, more the kind of movie that requires some thought and a little individual interpretation -similar to poetry. overall worth it, really worth it. the Herzog bits juxtaposed with the main narrative is an remarkable exercise in contrasting and complementary elements. BTW is it just me or is the man with the flowers on the runway some crazy homeless dude they picked up off the street to ad lib with Herzog? -either way that scene will rip your heart out

This is the first Korine film I've seen. His handle of narrative is not perfect but I tell you, the kid can compose a series of images.

The flying-nuns sequences, with the Silver Mt Zion song, are absolutely ingenious. They're wonderful. Everything else is a bit... lame.

Korine should've just sectioned off the nuns subplot and made a short film out of it, because it's genuinely awe-inspiring. Werner Herzog as a priest, what a stroke of genius. But the rest of the film sucks.
