This is a fairly solid old comedy, with lots of silly, but mostly hilarious moments. Lemmon is especially really good, as is Fonda and Cagney also fits his character like a glove. But it is the ending that makes this a classic, it's full of uplifting moments, but very quickly at the moment of death we change our mode of reflection from what we could be doing to what we have lost, because now we know it now that it has gone. It's such a rapid mood change that really strikes a chord.

With this cast I expected a lot more, and nothing in particular was more than remotely effective... apparently the pillaging of your allies is encouraged in the Navy.

Stagey, and too self-consciously hearty and rollicking in the parts probably directed by Ford. Still, some good performances here, particularly by Jack Lemmon.

Good cast, good acting, however a little bit slow at the beginning. You don't know where the plot may lead you, however it gets better and better. Maybe this was the idea for Robert Altman's MASH, there are parallels.

It can be tough differentiating one's screenplay about being in a very important war from the next one. There's a very gung-ho mentality when it comes to us vs. them and it's somewhat refreshing to see a movie about a bunch of people stuck on a boat with seemingly little consequence. At the same time though, this approach lacks grit; the makers of this film understood this and went the comedic route. Otherwise, these poor sailor bastards probably had little else to do.

I appreciated much in this film--the narrative arc, the varied ways in which we see these men struggle with life in the closed quarters of the ship, and most of all Jack Lemmon's comedic performance. That said, the film remains somewhat uneven, with several early dialogue scenes, and others scattered throughout that seem more on the order of a filmed play than the interesting conversations they should have been.
