I wanted to like this more - I love Jerzy Skolimowski's films - but it left me a bit cold. I think I just couldn't buy Jeremy Irons as a Polish builder.

Jeremy Irons delivers a standout performance in this allegorical tale of State building. The ending is rushed, but there are great moments of paranoia in Moonlighting, and great moments of humor as well.

Despite its subject matter, Moonlighting doesn't strain to be social or political commentary, or even an intricate euro-drama. It seems to aim for something more basic: the atmosphere of constant dread seems to take precedence. At the core of the film is Jeremy Irons' suffocating paranoia, his authentically stressed, nervous portrayal of a man endangered and overburdened by responsibility. Even as the film provokes other thoughts and emotions, all is sucked into this black hole.

Gripping story of hanging on by the skin of your teeth when you're up to your neck in a mundane yet harrowing ordeal... in a world that doesn't give a flying one. Irons is outstanding, but you probably could have guessed that sight unseen
