Skip the movie and watch "Smooth Criminal" on YouTube. It's the only decent part of this mess.

Rewatched December 2016. It may sound like sophistry, but somewhere in here, between the music videos, the montages, and the dreamlike snatches of plot, is Jackson saying, "Here's who I am, and what I want." While it has major shortcomings to say the least, in general terms it's the right kind of film: surreal, high-energy, kid-friendly, and music-heavy. And not without precedent... The Monkees' "Head" strikes me as a similar project that was also (understandably, TBF) scorned by critics.

Underseen and underrated, this gem slipped by everyone's radar in this Reagan era stunner. Jackson's dance sequences and movements manage to capture the very soul and essence of generation x "angst", as well as its bureaucratic racist undertones while still sprinkling a modicum of hope in the flash of a toe-step or a flick of the fedora. Critics concerned only w/ pedophilia allegations miss the power of a major artist's best work. Second only to MJ's clever KKK mocking one glove. - Armond White

A strange, almost disasterous structured movie - but 'Smooth Criminal' makes it worth the while hands down

A glorified music video, vanity project, but it's still pretty entertaining. Great dance sequences, as expected from MJ. The video game was fun and corny too!

Even without the creepy ego masturbation of Michael Jackson, it's a pretty putrid watch. I only saw it because my sister was a fan and had it on all of the time.

35 minutes of music videos followed by a 40 minute film, written by Michael Jackson where he turns into :a car a robot a space ship It is self indulgent, egocentric crap. As a paedophile story writer, he is a distant second to Jonathan King It can be summed up as: "and then I turn into a robot, and I'm all like pyoo! pyoo!"

On the second viewing, it's amazing how something like this was a commercial product for cinemas. The first half of music videos (especially the 'Leave Me Alone' segment) is far superior to the original short film Jackson helped create which makes up the second, but the entire thing is a fascinating mess. Pieces of it don't work, and the potential narcissism of it all is significant, but I am glad that at the height of his fame Jackson helped such an unconventional product to be made.

As a fan of MJ during these days I loved this. The "leave me alone" video is worth getting this alone. Sega based a video game on the "smooth criminal" video which you would get the bad guys to dance along with you....yes I am serious. Very entertaining.

This managed to make Michael Jackson look amazingly creepy while being weird in a really cool way at the same time. Joe Pesci is great as the villain, and all his henchmen have machine guns that look like movie cameras. Neat stuff, but worth just the one viewing.

No matter what's your opinion on Michael Jackson, he IS the king of pop. Though this movie is far away from perfect, it's the best one on market of the talent's musical achievement. As well music maker and dancer. The plot and acted parts are the weakest point of the movie, but I do watch and listen this video regularily since it's my son's favourite as well.

Really a kids' movie, but my recollection is that it wasn't marketed that way. Even so, has some definite problems. But the "Smooth Criminal" dance sequence alone makes the whole thing worthwhile. "Badder" is also great. And whatever other problems from which it suffers, it does, in a strange way, seem to want to say something.

Even for a vanity project this is astonishingly awful! There is no script to speak of, some so so claymation and a struggle with "drug dealer" Joe Pesci. I just KNOW that somewhere, Michael said yes to drugs when he agreed to make this film...

What the hell is this? Seriously WHAT THE HELL IS THIS? Allegedly this is a film, at least that's what the person who introduced this to me said, but I can't honestly believe them. What we have here is a series of really, really loosely connected music videos that don't have any hint of coherence stringing them together...and Michael Jackson turning into a transformer. Make of that what you will. The only good thing about this...thing is Smooth Criminal, so find that section and avoid the rest.

The A-plot is unwatchable (MJ turning into a Gundam notwithstanding) but all the elaborate music videos for songs on Bad nobody gives a crap about (Speed Demon, Leave Me Alone) and Smooth Criminal are awesome.

Michael Jackson claimed to have made Moonwalker aiming to comment on fans' perceptions of him, but this film (and I use that word loosely) only makes him look even more cloistered, disconnected from reality, and surrounded by yes-men. I usually like my films with a healthy dose of weirdness and batshit, but this one just feels like a transparently greedy tour of narcissism. I liked "Smooth Criminal" though.

Much like Prince's film efforts, a good soundtrack in search of a movie - comically grotesque egotism and bizarrely surreal imagery makes this a not uninteresting mess, but only really comes to life during the musical numbers, whose appeal are likely to ebb and flow dependent on your inherent appreciation of Jackson. Amusing to see Pesci here, presumably on a near-fall out of the business before the GOODFELLAS revival; as an actor, Jackson again proves himself a charismatic singer.
