Truly a diamond in the rough. An extremely underrated film, and quite possibly Robin Williams' best performance.

Full of endearing performances, perceptive and bittersweet moments -- but a few too many false endings. Williams is superb in the lead.

A surprisingly good performance by Williams here, who is usually an incredible, over-acting hack. The film does a competent job of blending comedy with drama, but in the end, really has nothing worthwhile to say, and few very entertaining scenes. Still, its low-key nature is commendable, and the natural, realistic ending was a nice touch.

This is a sweet drama/comedy about culture clash. Robin Williams is brilliant as Vladimir, the Russian musician. Released at the height of the cold war in the 80's, this film helped to humanize the Russians for me. This movie captures the immigrant spirit of the country. There are flaws in the film to be sure, but they can be forgiven. The scene in the supermarket with Vladimir trying to buy coffee is one of my favorites of the film.
