Loosely based on Maxim Gorky's novel, and, while the mother symbolizes the ideology of the revolution and the prospects of an untried utopian state, she also possesses the traditional patriarchal ideologies of the crumbled regime, which creates a unique commentary on the state of Soviet society, filled with chaos and revolutionary dreams. Apparently I saw this during film studies three years ago. Don't remember a thing...

A masterpiece. The shots are magnificent and help convey the misery, the helplessness of the mother, the anger of the people. I love how they show the faces, it so powerful. I think the took good executive decision relating to what and how to adapt the novel. Being short and not having dialogue imposes some limitations and they did very well with them, the ideological spirit persists. A friend and I went to see it with live music, fantastic experience.

Just because it's good to study doesn't mean I have to like it.

A few sections don't flow very well but this is made up for with some wonderful dynamic editing during the rest of the film. It's propaganda but nevertheless very human and worthwhile.

Tough to rate. At once technically impressive and really, really slow.

Pudovkin a goat. Should be remembered at the same level as all the early Soviets we learn about.

Energetic, with first-rate lighting and editing, and some really great shots; interesting for how it keeps up a fairly natural flow while in a near-constant state of montage for an hour and a half. As to the plot, it's yet more Soviet propaganda about the Revolution of 1905, with the total unsubtlety you'd expect.

Ranks right up there with Strike as one of the great early Soviet films. It's about as propagandistic as it sounds, but the narrative is quite strong, and the camerawork is terrific. Some clever editing techniques and a lot of dynamic cutting. Nice symbology and good performances. Pudovkin has a good eye for memorable, expressive faces. My only complaint is that I thought the story lost sight of the mother too often, especially as it builds towards its chaotic climax. But man, what an ending!

The music and cinematography (especially during the second half) bring this up a notch.

A masterpiece. The cinematography is immaculate, and so is the performance of the Mother. I saw it with a live orchestra and it made the experience even more transcendent.
