Pretty useless remake. Rebecca De Mornay was the selling ticket for it. Deborah Ann Woll was also nice to see out of vampire outfit, though she looked pretty same here.

Needless scenes that force characters to brutalise their friends don't reveal "the dark side of human nature" but the unseen hand of a tactless, torture-happy director devoid of truly relevant themes and ideas -- and of course heavily indebted to the still-vital likes of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. A miserable endurance test, the Saw-blunt Mother's Day is useful only as a contrast to genuinely inspired nasties like The Devil's Rejects and Last House on the Left.

The psychological elements, the horror aspects, and the lovely Rebecca De Mornay are what attracted me to Mother's Day. Following this, Mother's Day still only has these points of appeal. This is not a bad movie, but little pacing, rollercoaster pacing, and the constant feeling for around an hour that the movie is coming to a close takes away from what is otherwise a great movie.

It's a remake crediting its namesake as inspiration, but a complete overhaul of the script. As with all modern horror remakes, its attempt at sophistication is its downfall. It's offputtingly overwrought and contrived, and overflows with sketchy subplots of trifling melodrama in-between the torture porn. Do yourself a favor and watch the original (1980) Mother's Day. It is much simpler and vastly superior.

Against all odds this movie was quite entertaining. The director succeeds in making this a suspensfull thriller, with an unknown cast who all do a fairly good job. The characters all have something interesting about them wich makes you want to see the rest of the film. The final 20-25 minutes or so where a bit of a let down for me because the suspense we saw earlier makes way for mindless killing. But even that is good from time to time.
